Remote Access to CAD Design Tools,  2 October 1998

Remote access to CAD design tools is the latest facility to become available to students of the pioneering Internet-based MSc course in Advanced Microelectronics for Industrialists.

The course, now preparing to enrol its third intake of students, has broken new ground ever since its inception.

Launched under the Integrated Graduate Development Scheme of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the course is designed to enable career electronics graduates enhance their experience and qualifications without taking time off work.

It is a joint venture between Bolton Institute and the University of Northumbria delivered almost entirely through the Internet, using the high-speed ISDN link for communication between tutor and students.

Students are provided with a high specification personal computer and appropriate communications software, which they get to keep on successful completion of the course.

This now includes remote access to design tools via the PC.

"The development means that our students carry out design assignments from home, using CAD tools remotely via the Internet, with performance comparable to a high-speed workstation", says Roy Attwood, Course Co-ordinator.

Web site  www.bolton.ac.uk  gives teaching material samples and information on the course to interested companies and individuals.
