In July of this year, Bolton Institute, the Microelectronics Business centre for the North of England, was one of the first organisations in Europe to recognise the potential of the new MetaFrame for Solaris Product. The close collaborative relationship that Esteem has with Bolton Institute enabled them to take immediate advantage of the new technology.
"It is impossible to exaggerate the importance of this development. It rewrites the rules for teaching advanced Unix-based CAD packages at a distance. For the first time it is now feasible and economic to operate such software across continents so it extends the student base for such practical distance learning courses worldwide. It also opens up new opportunities for research students to work remotely from home" commented Roy Attwood, Principal lecturer at Bolton Institute at the time of the deployment. Five
Months Later...
We revisited Bolton Institute
to see how their MetaFrame for Solaris deployment has developed over the
past months.
"MetaFrame technology opens up the way for academic computer centres to service the CAD needs of a cluster of universities, at an overall cost saving in hardware, in licenses and manpower. It also means that smaller colleges that couldn't previously have considered purchasing and maintaining the necessary systems can now offer their students access to engineering applications at affordable expense. Thirdly, it offers the means of high quality engineering courses that include a substantial element of design to be delivered worldwide. As far as remote access to Unix based applications packages is concerned, with Esteem's help, it's cracked" commented Roy Attwood recently.
"The MetaFrame software is very reliable. It has never failed on me since I installed it. It is fast and stable, the difference it has made to our course, and remote access to UNIX CAD in general, is quite outstanding" stated Phil Knowles, System Administrator at Bolton Institute.
