Unetched specimens reflect the incident light uniformly, so the resulting image also appears uniform, although some non-metallic inclusions will reflect light differently so will be evident in the unetched condition. However, when etching takes place, the etchant will preferentially attack the high energy grain boundaries and these will reflect the light away from the eyepiece and will appear dark.
