Applications for glasses and glass-ceramics

You will probably have ‘looked ahead’ and seen mention of glass-to-metal-seals used for electronic packaging and fibre-optic components. But did you think of anything else? Our first list also contained:

• MELF diodes
• porcelain capacitors (used for high frequencies)
• the panels on the top of UV-erasable EPROM packages
• the binders for the precious metals used to coat ceramic capacitors
• glass fibre insulation for high-temperature cables
• the glass fibre reinforcement in FR-4 laminates

And there is the biggest glass component of all, the CRT or flat panel display that you might well be looking at as you study this module.
