Options for a 1µF capacitor

This particular value of capacitor was specifically chosen because this is an area where most types of capacitor are available, and the decision will be made largely on the grounds of performance and cost. You may have noticed that the question says nothing about operating conditions for the equipment, and this is certainly something one would want to take into account. Nor are you told whether a non-polar part is required. Nor is the tolerance specified, and this is frequently crucial. Did you spot these omissions?

The possible options include:

A mica capacitor. This would give an extremely reliable capacitor, with low drift and extremely stable, but not in a surface mount package, and definitely not at an affordable price!
A wound paper capacitor is unlikely to be available at this low voltage rating, although some highly reliable types intended for mains suppression purposes are available.
There is a wide range of polymer capacitors, of which polyester is probably the best general purpose option at this voltage rating.

All these types are non-polar but not well adapted for surface mounting, although some polymer capacitors are available in this format.

Aluminium electrolytic capacitors are available at this voltage, although 1µF is at the bottom of the typical value range.
Tantalum capacitors struggle at 100V, and only 50V types are readily available.

Both electrolytic types are polar, and not necessarily ultra-reliable.

A 1µF 100V working ceramic capacitor is available in a general purpose(X7R) dielectric, offering a non-polar solution, but not desperately stable – these dielectrics reduce in value gradually over time, and have a substantial temperature coefficient. Note that an 0805 part is at the top of its case limit, and it may be better to choose a larger body size.

Did you spot that final piece of information you didn’t collect at the start? You need to know from the application whether stability and known temperature coefficient are part of the specification.

You could of course check availability by doing a web search, and this is well worth doing if you are ever challenged to think ‘out of the box’ as regards choice of component.
