| Brief description | |
| Description The aim of the project is to develop an instrument for measuring the turbidity of drinking water. Turbidity is the property of a liquid to scatter and absorb light rays rather than to allow them to be transmitted in straight lines through a sample, and is an important water quality parameter. Turbidity is usually caused by suspended particles which may give water a cloudy or turbid appearance. The instrument will use low cost infra-red LED emitters as a light source, and photo diode detectors to measure the transmitted and scattered light. Some analogue signal processing will be required followed by and analogue to digital converter and microcontroller. A simple HMI will display the measurement and allow calibration. It is anticipated that the project will involve the following steps: * Investigation of measurement techniques, optical components, interface circuits * Design of analogue interface, data converter and microcontroller electronics * Construction of an initial prototype * Production of microcontroller software * Design of PCB * Production of final instrument to demonstrate the technology If successful, the technology resulting from this project could be further developed into an on-line instrument or an intelligent sensor for measurements in the distribution system. | |

| This project is a modification of the original proposal which was considered too difficult due to development of sensor. ADT | |
